About the Condition

What is Hip Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease where the cartilage that cushions the hip joint gradually wears away. As cartilage thins and disappears, the bones begin rubbing against each other — causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

Hip OA typically develops after age 50 but can occur earlier in people with previous hip injuries, congenital hip problems, or a family history. It is progressive — symptoms tend to worsen over years if left untreated.

Symptoms of Hip OA

Groin or thigh pain that worsens with walking or weight-bearing
Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
Difficulty bending to put on socks or shoes
Limping or altered gait
Pain that prevents a full night's sleep
Grinding or clicking sensation in the hip

Treatment Options

1

Conservative Treatment (Early Stage)

Weight loss, physiotherapy, walking aids, anti-inflammatory medication, and joint injections (hyaluronic acid or corticosteroids). These manage symptoms but do not reverse cartilage damage.

2

When to Consider Surgery

When pain significantly impacts quality of life, sleep, and daily activities — and conservative measures no longer provide adequate relief.

3

Total Hip Replacement

The gold standard for advanced hip OA. Dr. Gupta replaces the damaged joint with a prosthesis — walk same day, home in 2–3 days, pain-free in 6 weeks.
