Hip Fracture Treatment
Chandigarh — Urgent Surgery
Hip fractures are orthopaedic emergencies. Dr. Sandeep Gupta operates within 24–48 hours of fracture — significantly reducing complication risk in elderly patients.
Hip Fracture is a Medical Emergency
If an elderly person falls and cannot stand or bear weight on one leg, suspect a hip fracture. Get to hospital immediately — do not wait. Early surgery (within 24–48 hours) significantly reduces mortality risk and complications.
Types of Hip Fractures
Understanding Hip Fractures
Neck of Femur Fracture
Most common. The fracture occurs at the narrow part of the femur just below the ball. Usually treated with hemi-arthroplasty or total hip replacement.
Intertrochanteric Fracture
Fracture between the lesser and greater trochanters. Usually fixed with a dynamic hip screw (DHS) or cephalomedullary nail.
Subtrochanteric Fracture
Below the trochanters. Requires internal fixation with an intramedullary nail. Complex anatomy makes these technically demanding.
Surgical Options
Treatment Approach
Hemi-arthroplasty
Only the femoral head (ball) is replaced — the socket is preserved. Used for displaced neck-of-femur fractures in elderly patients with lower activity demands. Fast procedure, quick recovery.
Total Hip Replacement
Both the ball and socket are replaced. Used when the socket is also damaged (e.g., pre-existing arthritis). Gives better long-term outcome in active elderly patients.
Internal Fixation
Screws, plates, or an intramedullary nail hold the broken pieces together. Used for intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures, and some undisplaced femoral neck fractures.
