Ceramic Hip Implant
in India — Complete Guide
Ceramic hip implants produce the least wear debris of any bearing material — making them the gold standard for younger, more active patients. Dr. Sandeep Gupta explains everything.
Ask About Ceramic ImplantsMaterial Overview
What is a Ceramic Hip Implant?
The femoral head (ball) and sometimes the acetabular liner (socket) of a hip implant are made from advanced ceramic material — typically alumina (aluminium oxide) or zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA).
Ceramic is exceptionally hard and smooth, producing very little friction when the ball moves in the socket. This translates to minimal wear debris — tiny particles that, in older metal implants, caused bone loss (osteolysis) and implant loosening over time.
The result: ceramic implants can realistically last 25–30 years or more with proper placement — significantly longer than older polyethylene or metal bearings.
Ceramic-on-Ceramic vs Ceramic-on-Polyethylene
Ceramic on Ceramic (CoC)
- • Lowest wear rate of any bearing couple
- • Ideal for patients under 55 or high-activity
- • Very rare risk of audible squeak (<1%)
- • Estimated life: 30+ years
- • Higher cost
Ceramic on Polyethylene (CoP)
- • Very low wear rate (10x better than metal-on-PE)
- • Silent — no squeak risk
- • Suitable for all ages
- • Estimated life: 20–25 years
- • More cost-effective
