When is Revision Needed?
Reasons for Hip Revision Surgery
Implant Loosening
The most common reason for revision. Over time, the cement or bone integration may fail, causing the implant to become unstable.
Implant Wear
The bearing surface wears over 15–20 years, producing debris that causes inflammation and bone loss (osteolysis).
Dislocation
The ball slips out of the socket. Recurrent dislocation after hip replacement often requires revision to correct implant positioning.
Infection
Periprosthetic infection requires removal of the infected implant, antibiotic treatment, and re-implantation after infection clearance.
Fracture Around Implant
A fall or trauma can cause a fracture of the bone around the existing hip implant (periprosthetic fracture), requiring surgical fixation or revision.
Adverse Reaction
Rare metal-on-metal implants can cause adverse local tissue reactions requiring implant removal and replacement.
