Your Recovery Timeline
First steps
The physiotherapy team visits you in the recovery area. With support, you stand and take your first steps. Most patients are surprised by how manageable this feels. Pain is well-controlled with IV medication.
Walking with support
You move from bed to chair, then begin short walks with a walker or crutches. IV lines are removed. Oral medication manages pain effectively. Physiotherapy sessions begin twice daily.
Discharge home
Most patients are discharged on Day 3 with oral medication, a home physiotherapy plan, and a follow-up appointment at 2 weeks. You can climb stairs with support before leaving the hospital.
Home recovery
Rest with short, frequent walks at home. Keep the wound dry. Sleep on your back or the non-operated side with a pillow between your legs. Attend your 2-week follow-up — stitches are removed and wound is reviewed.
Increasing activity
Gradually increase walking distance daily. Most patients stop using a walker by Week 4–6. You can travel by car (as a passenger), use stairs independently, and resume light household activities.
Return to normal life
Most patients resume normal daily activities including cooking, shopping, and light outdoor walking. Swimming is safe from Month 3. Driving may resume when you can brake quickly without hesitation — usually 6–8 weeks.
Full recovery
Return to full activity including travel, exercise, and social commitments. Cycling and swimming are excellent long-term activities for hip replacement patients. Most discomfort resolves completely by Month 6.
